Crap, I don't want to introduce non-VW subjects here or anything but
this problem sounds oh so familiar to me.  My 240Z with electronic
ignition used to do the exact same thing and bugged the hell out of me
until it finally died completely, no spark at all.  It was the ignition
module.  Many Z people have been stumped by this and I've been able to
cure quite a few ailing cars by replacing this module.  Maybe this is
your problem too.  If so, I would suggest you check the ignition control
unit by the windshield/rain gutter area, all related wiring and the
sender in the distributor.  The old Bentley has all the easy procedures
to test these parts.  Or swap parts from a good running car.
