22w?? Zoinks!!
I use what's known as a 67bulb. My brake lights are 1156 bulbs. The 67's
are a low wattage bulb that isn't as bright as the regular marker lights
which is fine since the reflector material tends to amplify the light
comming from them. My tail lights and fog lights are the same brightness
(Until I step on the brakes, obviously.) for a reason. I want the added
lighting of the extra bulb but at the same time, I don't want people
thinking in on the brakes when im not. (Which was how it looked with the
first bulbs I installed. Then when I did step on the brakes, it only got
a little brighter.)
The idea for me is to enhance some safety factors and not look cool. I
really like my car and I don't want some blind person rear ending me
because they couldn't see a wall of brake lights in front of them. (Yes,
they do give drivers licenses to blind people. How do I know, a blind
woman pulled right out in front of me in a Saturn yesterday. I mean, it
was RIGHT in front of me. If she would of waited 1 full second more, id
of been passed her.

Mine are on all the time. Its already wired to the factory lights. no
need to add anything, unless you want the ability to turn on the rear
fogs separately. I just wish I could include a second brake light circuit
to it and have another braking light too!

You got to use a lower wattage bulb. Its just too hot.
HTH!
