Ah, yes! Windshield installation!
I use a small diameter rope wrapped around the gasket.
Generally it seems best to tuck the bottom in first and work around to the top. The last two times
I've put one in a MK II it worked better to get the top started first and pull the bottom in last.
Maybe I just got tired of fighting the rope trying to keep it in place starting at the bottom ;^)

Anyway, the best approach is to make sure that as you pull an edge of the gasket in that you push
and shove on the glass, in a very tender manner, to help the gasket and the glass get seated into
the correct position so that as you work around the glass the last part of the gasket can be pulled
into position fairly easily. And last, but not least, never push on a corner of the glass. I've also
broken a corner off!

Seasons greatings to all Scirocco lovers. I am new to this email list
thing so go easy on me if I screw things up. Just got a new winshield
seal for my A1 and was wondering if anyone had any tips or tricks for
an easy install. I tried to do an install years ago on an A2 using
the string method and ended up cracking the bottom corner and ruining
the window. My A1 has the dash out so that might make it easier.
 Thanks.

Thanx, someone needed to say that.

-George
P.S. Mark, you need to come down sometime and enjoy what you helped me
create, muahahahahaha

Well my (and others') subtle hints haven't worked, so:

WTF!!!!! WOULD YOU GUYS SHUT THE HELL
UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't know if I'm
speaking for anyone else here, but this constant babbling about
nothing related to Sciroccos, or even cars for that matter, is
diluting the list to the point where it's 99% noise... EFUCKINGNUFF
ALREADY!!!

This email list has tolerated more off-topic stuff than most, and that
was a good thing - it made for interesting reading, and spawned and
fortified many friendships over the years. BUT it's gotten way out of
hand...

Without naming names, I'm tired of seeing the same (very) small
handful of people dragging threads on and on without contributing a
single meaningful thing to it... I think you guys are forgetting
there are HUNDREDS of people subscribed to this list, and no one wants
to see the same two or three people clogging their inboxes with
useless drivel, OVER and OVER and OVER again... And it's not just
the odd thread this is happening to - lately, pretty much EVERY thread
has been hijacked long after the question has been answered, and
continues on and on with bullshit reply after bullshit reply...

It's hard to maintain a sense of "community" when the majority of
traffic mostly revolves around a small circle of people - ESPECIALLY
when the people in that circle have very little, if anything, to add
to the knowledge base of the list... It's actually pretty amazing how
a few people can completely change the dynamic of an email list of
hundreds of people - in this case, for the worse...

I miss the vibrant, varied, and entertaining scirocco.org list of the
past - maybe it's gone forever, maybe it'll return - but hopefully I
can convince a *couple* people to think about the content of their
post before they hit 'Send'... When you reply to a post will the
hundreds of people reading your reply find it informative, meaningful,
or at the very least entertaining or humorous? If not, maybe you
should make your point OFF-LIST to that person... I think the meaning
of "public forum" got lost on some of you, and the list has suffered
as a result...

I don't want to scare anyone off (especially newbies) from posting -
if you've got a question, answer, observation, or even a story about
cars/driving in general, great, post away! That's what we're all here
for! Even the odd friendly jab is alright... BUT ease up on the one
sentence posts (usually top posted with the 39 previous replies
unsnipped below) that contribute NOTHING to the thread... I can't be
the only one that's frustrated with this...

People are leaving the list (whether or not they announce it), and by
the looks of it many have receded into lurk-mode. I think the present
"vibe" of the list isn't conducive to it's growth as the best source
of information and discussion of our beloved cars. Sorry to rant like
this guys, but I don't want to sit idly by while the list I've grown
to love and look forward to reading every day degrades to the point
where I no longer want to be a part of it...

Mark.

I would like to clean up the 16v fuel lines. The current ones on my car
are starting to rust on the solid portion of the fuel line near the
injectors. Has anyone just buffed the solid portion with a wire wheel?
Does this last or will they just rust faster now that the anodized
coating has been removed?
Thanks, Rick.

Lars.

I am one of those people he didn't name. If not
fully, I am certainly borderline, my apologies List.

But Lars, you have singled yourself out, and I take
you to task in the game we like to call: 'Whack-a-Mole'. (The point being that it's the mole who pops out of his hole that gets whacked.) Nothing personal, you're just a handy example.

But really this is for Everyone. (Think Gary Oldman
in 'The Professional'.)

OK,

- Top Posting. (I could go on but it stands on it's
own.) This'll become a Holy War so lets just move along, shall we? <http://www.google.com/search?q=netiquette>

- Not editing/snipping the rest of the thread.
Besides the laborious trouble it becomes to keep the
threads tidy there are people who subscribe to the list in Digest mode. One email each day with EVERY post smashed together. Lets think about what our unedited posts look like to them.

- One line replies(a) They almost get lost in these
long, unedited replies.

- One Line Replies(b) And they sometimes hold very,
very, little Content. And a lot of the time I'm not even funny.

- Interpersonal Chattiness and Thread Drift. Like
the List Nazi said (It was _his_ turn to be the LN), we often get to acting like it's a party line, and take the conversation off into LaLa Land. Pity the newbie who must often feel like the 1st day at High School and doesn't fit in with the Cool Kids and doesn't have the personal & institutional memory to get the In-Jokes. And can't get much help with the
given problem.

I've been around since the Second Wave (ooh, bad
analogy) since around 18 months after the list went live. I have seen em come and seen em go, sitting here by the Stage Door. Lots of them have bitterly vented as they beat feet towards the door that it was too much noise to signal and to hell with that.

We have done better, we can be great again. Every so
often we need, and get, a hipcheck into the boards. Don't take it personal. In fact Don't Respond- that would be a great follow up. Think about it awhile. Do the right thing as you see fit, keep your eyes and ears open and mouth (fingers) shut and be a good example to the next
guy.

Welcome, welcome:

I want to point out two different links to our own beloved Scirocco.Org web site. (Many hands have gone into it's current state of goodness.)

<http://www.scirocco.org/tech>
Under the Tech Procedures select MISC and then Windshield Replacement.

Note: some people like using slippery stuff like soap, but I believe it won't be good to keep in there long term. Better to use something like a wax or a grease, something that wont hold water long term.

Now, I wrote it but it could stand to be augmented by the portion of this FAQ that deals with Leaks:
<http://www.scirocco.org/faq/misc/#leak>

It mentions not using silicon sealant to fix leaky seals. (I don't recommend ANY sealant for _new_ installs of window seals in A1 cars, just being overly inclusive info wise.)

HEY BRETT! I changed my email address since the 'How To' was posted. No longer a Mindspring customer. 'tank you.

You can usually find from auto supply shops the silver-ish coloured paint
they use on alternator casings...this stuff is great to use to spray the
ends after hitting them with a wire wheel...I've seen many local 16v nuts
do this

In the next year, you will improve in many wonderful ways, and your

reaching them, and seek to gather with others of like mind.

you know, i always wondered if rhinoliner wouldn't be a bad idea. i'd like to undercoat both my rides as they're quite solid underneath. i don't have a clue as how to apply it nor how much it would cost. fwiw, i tried some spray undercoating last year (march) and i _still_ get it on my pants/clothes when i touch it. :(

remove and inspect the speedo cable, if its okay, then your problem is the instrument cluster.

>
>My speedometer stopped working suddenly last summer while working on
>the car. It worked on a short drive the other day but then quit
>again. I've looked at the line that connects transmission>EGR
>thing>Speedo and it doesn't have any glaring problems. I also
>unscrewed the fitting where it joins the speedo and retightened it
>(because I thought pushing and pulling on the dash to work on wiring
>may have disconnected it or something). I'm quite frankly afraid to
>pull my dash apart any more right now because I'm afraid it will mess
>up my other really finicky wiring.
>
>What should I do to troubleshoot this one? Are there common specific
>parts that fail? The bentley (and haynes and clymer) manual has been
>surprisingly unhelpful on this one.
>
>And it's an '80 S dash in a 79, if that matters. Thanks.

Well my friend Sean rang in the new year on the side of the highway
broken down in his 85 8v. He had the car towed to my place just after
midnight, and we discovered that the axle nut had worked it's way
loose and it looks like the hub/bearing is destroyed... The weird
thing is we just swapped out the hubs about a month ago with ones I
had lying around, and I remember specifically torquing the axle nuts
to the proper torque... SO, I guess the lesson in all this is to
stake the axle nuts - even though it's an "egg nut"...
