Desperation... any more ideas (16V problems)?

me and tobias both had the woodruff key issue. if that's the case, the cam 
timing will change from the flywheel timing. just put your flywheel at TDC 
and see where the cam mark lines up. this doesn't really match your symptoms 
though. have you fault tested the knock box? btw, since your engine changes 
by unplugging the test harness, you're not in true limp mode as far as your 
cie-e box is concerned (you could still be having knock box probs though). 
also, this indicates that your dpr is working.  next steps i'd take would be 
a) check knock box fault codes with led light, and b) see if timing advances 
appropriately when the rpms increase (bentley has a procedure for this).
