Well, gee, you don't *need* a puller if you have a spare oaf around and
you think it's professional and proper to have some yahoo balancing on
your tranny while you sneak a pair of circlip pliers between his boots.
It's worth the $17 IMO to get the frigging tool and send the oaf
packing.  I'm cheap and I did.

Regardless, once you get the clip off, get the dished washer out too,
and the flange may pop off by itself.  If not, you may need a Tool Of
Persuasion (aka hammer).  They sometimes get stuck...see, the tool is
just a spring compressor relieving tension from the flange, not a
puller per se.
