series resister replacement?

blower motor only works on speeds 2 and 3.  replaced the switch, no luck. 
figure it's the resistor. went to pull it from the parts car. 2 problems:
1. how do the wires come off the damn thing? they look like spade 
connectors, but they weren't coming off. couldn't get a good look, and 
didn't want to break anything.
2. easy enough to get to in the parts car without an interior/dash, but is 
this as big as a pita as it looks like with carpeting, dash, etc still in 
place?
