Eric, dont sweat the crack. Clean it up (prep for welding), and weld it.
What most likely happened is that the accident slightly tweaked the frame.
This could make the engine put more force on the lower rad support.
The other possibility is that you got a tiny crack started in the accident
and it propogated by your downshifting (thats that puts the cracks on the
bottom).
Another note: any front impact on a scirocco puts incredible downward force
on the lower rad support, since the entire engine attempts to rotate forward
(16v's are top heavy).
