i need a little advice (more accident damage found)

yesterday, while i was changing the oil on my 87 16v at the local dealership 
where my brother works (he is the assistant service manager, so we get to 
use the lifts on saturday afternoons) i noticed somethng very disturbing.

on (what i believe to be) the lower subframe, (the metal that the front 
motor mount bolts to) i found a crack that goes all the way up to the front 
motor mount, the crack is about 1/8th of an inch wide. now the strange thing 
is, i looked there right after the accident happened and there was nothing 
there that i could see. my best guess is: when it happened, the crack was 
small enough to not notice, but over the summer it opened it right up.

i guess what i am asking is: how serious is this and would it make more 
sense to pick up another scirocco (i know where one is sitting) and transfer 
all the aftermarket stuff over to the new one and part mine out?

anyone have any thoughts?
