Dan, the reason you are blowing speakers is because you are over extending
the voice coil OR your head unit puts out "dirty" power.  I think it is a
combination of both.  You see, the speakers you are using are not designed
as a free-air application, they are designed to have a closed back to
them, like a door pocket or the like.  Your trunk is a huge open area, the
the cones are not getting any air resistance, so they are throwing farther
than they should.  Three possible solutions here:

1: Box the speakers in on the underside of the hatch cover
2: Buy specific free air speakers
3: Do 1 or 2 AND run your music from a separate amp
