Small point, but actually the earliest Syncros (no 'h') were the Quantums, 
and were in fact identical to the Quattros in terms of drivetrain. The 
other VW Syncros, however, are different. The Quattro-style system works 
like this: first position leaves all differentials unlocked, second one 
locks only the center, and the third locks the center and rear at the same 
time (front one is not lockable).
