Re: Things that confuse upshift indicators?

There is a switch which incorporates the backup light switch and the
upshift indicator switch installed in the trasnmission on the selector
shaft housing.

It is not uncommon for the upshift portion of the switch to fail, which
means that the relay can no longer tell when you're in fifth, and so
assumes you're in R through 4. You can test the function of the switch
with a multimeter and the Bentley. There are apparently at least two
version of the switch, with slightly different pin locations.

The other possibility is that if your transmission was recently replaced,
it may have been replaced with one that does not have the upshift light
switch provisions (I think around 88 the upshift light was dropped,
leaving a simple single pole switch for the reverse lights.) If this is
the case, then you might as well disable your upshift light by pulling the
relay, or else short the 5th gear circuit at the transmission harness
(better to pull the relay, which I think is in position 4 on the relay
plate??? )
