Re: non-roc:Chipping a Passat 1.8T

Damn, forgot to finish the reply before sending. :-) I wanted to
comment on your Passat vs Beetle statement. I assume your New Beetle is
a 5 speed? If yes, that would definitely explain your New Beetle being
'MUCH' quicker than the Passat. The first 1.8T car I test drove at the
dealer was a Tiptronic Passat (didn't have manuals at the time in
stock), while trying out the 'manual' shifting. To me, it made
absolutely no acceleration difference compared to just leaving the thing
in automatic. I left that car very disappointed with the 1.8T thinking
'what's the hype?'. I went back a week or so later and went for a spin
in a 5 speed 1.8T Passat. The difference is night and day! I was
amazed how well the 1.8T moved the ~3100+ pound Passat with the 5 speed.
Eventually, my VR6 Jetta will get traded in on a 1.8T Passat. The
question is, do I want to wait to see if they will offer 4Motion and 5
speed with the 1.8T or just settle for the front wheel drive? I have a
big itch to get a Passat. The wife and I both LOVE the new ones,
especially since now they put a little design in the hood. Before it
was just a big, huge flat thing, now it has the 'raised' area. Sure,
call me a freak, but it's a pet peave of mine to look out and see a
stylish hood. ;-)

I haven't driven a 1.8T New Beetle yet, so can't really say anything on
the difference of the auto/5 speed in them, but I would have to bet that
you'd find the same results as I did with the Passat.

The moral of the story? Tiptronic = glorified automatic. :-)
