Re: Back-up light switch

The reverse light switch on these models also doubles as an upshift-light
switch to tell the upshift control unit when you're in 5th gear. The
wires for the reverse light switch are (I think) black and black with a
blue stripe (black being ignition power, bk/bl being switched to reverse
lights I think). If you jumper these two wires, the reverse lights should
come on (key in 'run' position.)

Replacement switches may have different pinouts than factory - it may be
necessary to re-pin the wiring connector when installing the switch -
check the terminals on the old one vs the terminals on the new - ask
someone with a Bentley for wiring advice if they're different.

Replacement involves 2 11mm(?) 12 point bolts or 2 8mm/9mm(?) hex bolts,
depending on year. You may find access to be easier if you move the
coolant resevoir out of its bracket - it's easier to see what you're doing
then. Replacement switches are probably in the $25 USD range (I'm
guessing) and are likely VW only parts.

Hope this helps,
