What is it with me and bum 'roccos???

Okay, so my '84 experience hasn't been even close to fun. Lotsa money,
time, and it's still messed up. So, I bought the '81, with high hopes.
2 days after I brought it home, the exhaust pipe right behind the cat
broke at the cat flange, creatring a very loud, obnoxious car. Fixed
that ($25 pipe, couplea hours and a snowy back), and all was well. Last
night, while driving to my girlfriends employers Christmas party, I
turned into the driveway of the restaraunt (through some snow), and my
passengers side front wheel is making all kinds of really bads noises.
Turns out the outer CV is toast. Had to get it flatbedded 30 miles
home, and I'm about to take it apart. But really, what the hell is it?
All I've ever heard is that VWs are very reliable, strong, and tend to
live long lives. But both of my VW experiences have proven that to be
not so true.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not giving up (although there are certain people
who think I should get something a little more.....normal?), but
sheesh! I don't know how much longer I can do this!!

'84, '81, both inoperable at the moment.

A quote from the T-shirt of one of my bestest buddies:
"VW's don't die, they go to the old Volks home."
