FI is the way to go for max power. But thats only if you have all the parts
available to tune it. A set of carbs may make more power than our CIS, due
to lower restriction from the air intake, etc. But a well setup FI system
in general, will make more power. Sure you see NASCAR still running carbs,
but thats only because its in the rulebooks. They also run MSD ignitions,
and vacuum advance. So they're not exactly modern. Look at most any other
top level of racing, and you will see FI in front of carbs, if any of the
teams are even still running carbs. The main exception to this is drag
racing. And from my working with some of the teams involved in drag racing,
I don't think it was as much because the carbs made more power, as it was
that the teams didn't want to forsake the tried and true carb to have to
completely start over from scratch trying to wring every last hp out of FI.

As for our cars, you might gain several hp by dumping our intakes, and
the adjustability of the carbs may get a better mixture for peak power. I
didn't catch whether there was anything else done to this 200hp car, but I
could buy that there was a pretty significant gain in switching to carbs.
But if someone were to properly tune an intake for our cars, then plumb in
an programmable EFI system, I'd bet it'd run rings around the carb equipped
cars.
