The DX switches on most radios are used to alter the sensitivity
(especially in AM mode) of the scan/seek mode, to enable reception of
distant stations.

When switched to local mode, the senistivity is reduced to allow selection
of higher strength signal (ie local stations) without the radio stopping on
every random burst of noise.

It is quite rare for the DX/local switch to actually have an effect on the
received signal however.
