Re: Fuel pump prob?

Ok, I went through the same fiasco on my 87 8v (Jetta, but the same).
The transfer pump should not effect cold start unless you were below a
     quarter tank generaly speaking.

Pull the outlet hose off the transfer pump, jump the fuel pump relay,
and if you get a good steady flow, the transfer pump is fine. They
usually either dribble/sputter (bad) or flow nicely (good).

Start small with Fuel filter, and make sure the banjo bolt with the
factory fuel filter screen has been swapped at the fuel distributor.

     I wound up a few weekends ago;

        Replacing, fuel filter
Replacing Fuel Pressure Accumulator (I think this was the solution
to my problem, as it was not keeping pressure in the system)
        Replaced injector o-rings
Replcaed injector number one as I discovered it was bad just
dribbling gas into cyl # 1 which could have been interuppting a clean
     firing order of the enigine.

Wahla, my Jetta now runs great, and it feels like I re-discoverd 10hp.

     Hope this helps,

Howdy people:

Recently, I inquired about the amount of current a fuel pump for my '87 8v
should draw. I was told 3-5 amps nominal, 7-8 max. Well, my pump is drawing
8.75 amps. Could this be a bad transfer pump starving the main, or just a
bad main pump?

I only have a problem with the car starting cold. Once warm, it drives up
steep hills, makes sharp turns, and whatever else one could think of,
without any sputtering. When cold starting though, it cranks for about 6-7
seconds before sputtering to a start. Usually, I open the throttle fully,
and it starts much easier. After it starts cold, it runs terrible until
warm, or maybe in my case, until pressurized.

Any suggestions?

Regards,
Paul Hanley
