Its my recollection that the stock 16V exhaust works quite well. If you 
were wanting a little better performance (HP/fuel economy) then by all 
means, you can buy a free flowing cat and the cat back system. About 
the best you could do is with a free flowing car, ane maybe a better 
flowing muffler. As far as I can remember, the 16V exhaust has a 
mandrel bent system??? I dont remember. (I kinda doubt it tho) 

Also, depending on where you live, a SS system might be overkill. This 
year i've installed an alumized system on my GLi to see just how long 
it does last. So far, so good.

Then again, if you can find a good muffler shop to make a custom system 
for you, theres no need to spend alot of money on something they can 
make and install for less!
