benefits of running mechanical lifters

I am just wondering what the benifits of running mechanical lifters over hydraulice
lifters would be. I see a lot of race engines and high cmpression engines being run
with the mechanical lifters and it just doesn't make sense to me! Is this because you
can manually adjust them? How would that help? I want to figure out what I
am going to do with my 16v when I get the new 2.0L. This is my plan so far:
I will sell my 1.8L 16v or maybe keep it for later and I'm am getting a tall block from
England (the new A3 16v which has a longer stroke and 150hp STOCK!) and then
having Techtonics or maybe this local place that does drag car stuff and has a flow
bench port the head and running 268 Schrick cams. The cams will probably wait
until I get the engine in to save on initial costs. This won't be happening 'til next year
as I still have a bit left with my suspension/interior/exterior. I am just playing
with ideas. Thanks,
