     The reason behind solid lifters is that you don't have to worry about 
them needing oil to keep the valve opening and closing.  A hydraulic lifter 
needs oil pressure to keep it pumped up to it's maximum efficiency.  I have 
had hydraulic lifters "collapse" on me in another car.  It's NOT nice, you 
lose a ton of power all of a sudden.  This is what people are trying to avoid.
