You can shim up the pressure but you will be reducing airflow if you use 
the smaller metering plate that comes with the old system.  You will end 
up running very rich.

The random sputtering may be in the ignition module of the knock system, 
sending timing askew in which case you will have sacrificed the wrong 
lamb(da).  Have you tried swapping out that and knock ECU?

And then you want to sell the engine but not the car?
