Let's start a retrospective thread

My understanding is that the HD and Sport have the same damping
charateristics, just that the sport is designed for a lower ride height.

Having said that the problem isn't that the shock can't control the spring,
it's that the shock can't control the rate of the spring and the bump stop
and if the suspension is lowered enough that the car is virtually on the
bump stops at all times then even a relatively small sharp edged bump causes
undue harshness.
I don't want to cut the bump stop cause that'll make it's rate even higher
when it does come into play.
So basically the strut has got to be shorter or the top of the strut needs
to mount higher up.
Or perhaps you dispense with the stock bump stop, revise the strut design so
the stop is internal and the strut is effectively shorter. I'm hoping that
is what Bilstein has done. I hope to measure a few things before everything
is assembled.
I'm 90% certain I'll install H& R coilovers on my 84, which gets anything it
needs.
My POS 16V, which still irritates the shit out of me, needs a cheaper
solution.
TIM I'm sure.
