Valve tool 541/1 for 16v's???

My cheapassed method is to take a 1/2" drive socket that's a little bit smaller than the diameter of the lifter, so it's a sort of tight fit in the lifter hole, and grind out the 1/2" drive end so it's round and bigger. ;^)
Then I put that on top of the valve retainer, ground out hole down, and place the one end of the spring compressor on the socket.
It's a little tight working in there, but I don't imagine it's a lot worse the VW tool.
I'm assuming the spring compressor you have is a "C-clamp" type.

ETKA lists the cams as 027..... no W or M though that I could find.
The easiest way to determine if you have stock cams is to measure the lift with a dial caliper. Measure over the top of the lobe and then at 90? to that and subtract the second measurement.
You can get stock cam lift values here:

Ok who's got a "modified" setup for pulling valves out of a 16v head?

I pulled my 16V head apart tonight. Interesting setup on the distributor. Never had one apart before...Anyway I had a spring puller tool for a chevy in my tool box, but when I got in the VW head I discovered they put them way down in those little holes. 8-(. So I pull out my Bently and they tell me I need to have these "special tools" or have a qualified VW service center take care of it. "RIGHT"

My goal is to break the head down for a good cleaning then storage for later.

BTW the cam shafts that came out of it were 029 or 027 stamped with a W or M on one. Are those the stock 16v Cam's that came in them?

Thanks
David
