I can accept that. We are talking about a people that has hated our
guts for centuries, hated each other for centuries. Actually it may
not last a century. Some of those dumb assholes are going to get
something bigger (firepower) than a 747 and the world will glow a
little sooner than later. The fundamental problem with that situation
is that we are under the mistaken assumption that they want democracy,
they like ANY WESTERN civilization. If you go over there and get
captured, they don't give a flying fuck if you are British, Canadian,
or from the US, they will kill you... they will do it gleefully and
they will desecrate your corpse. Because that gets them 40 virgins in
Allah's Heaven.

Ancient hatred really gives a fuck if anyone is liberal or not.

The fact of the matter is that if we leave in a month, one year, or
ten years from now... they are still going to hate us and send out
terrorists to kill westerners. I don't think for a second this is
about stabilizing the region... this is about what makes our economy
tick. Oil. If we had enough oil to maintain the lifestyle that we
are ALL used to, there would be alot of Arabs with no income, and
nothing really to hate us for. I am all for an alternative energy
source. If someone can build me a solor powered VW that's as fun to
drive as the ones I own then I would buy it... or come up with
biodiesel that is as easy to get as gasoline, I'd consider it. All of
us by membership to this list feeds the fire so to speak with our love
of cars that are dependent on foriegn oil. Dependence on foriegn oil
means that we have to protect the tankers and our "business"
associates in Saudi Arabia. Break the dependence on Oil and the US
wouldn't have troops and ships in that area. We (the western
civilzation) have painted ourselves into a corner. If all the oil
dried up tommorow our countries and economy would grind to a halt.
While that might thrill the batfuck out of the Neo-Luddites, that
means the end of life as we know it for many of us. Look at New
Orleans... when the infastructure ground to a halt the city tore
itself apart. We wouldn't have a mass way to move goods and people
about the country and at least in the US we would have something on
the scale or worse of the Great Depression.

I still say we should have at most assassinated Hussein and not lingered.
