speaker installation - preserving mk1 door panels

George,

Please don't cut the door panels, just so you can use your 5 1/4"
speakers...

Instead, I'd sell them, and buy a set of 4x6" m speakers w/bass blockers, or
a subwoofer crossover, for the doors. If you don't have the speaker housings
on the doors, they can easily be added later. That's if the 4" hole is where
the speaker housings go, on the bottom of the door, if you're not sure, send
me a pic of it. The "m" is for metric, and they'll fit perfectly, in the
stock position, without any modifications. There's a guy selling Cerwin Vega
passive subwoofer crossovers, on Ebay, for cheap.

Or, I'd install another set of 4" speakers, so you don't have to cut
anything. Get a with a passive subwoofer crossover, or bass blockers. There
was another ebay seller, selling new Jensen subs for $20 plus shipping. Now
Jensen speakers are kinda cheap, but they fit behind the passenger seat, or
you can mount them in the back, and they sound alright. Pioneer used to make
a subwoofer, that fit inside the spare. You might be able to find a used one
on ebay for cheap.

Last year, I bought a set of Alpine 4x6"m speakers for my '79 Scirocco, and
they sound awesome! I went with a 10 Bazooka
The Alpines have rubber surrounds, so they won't disintegrate, after a
couple of years, like the foam does.

If your 4" speakers aren't bad, you'd be amazed, how much better they'll
sound with bass blockers, or a passive crossover. I ran a set of stock
Corrado SLC 4x6" speakers, before I got the Alpines, and they sounded great
with the subwoofer crossover, and sub.

HTH!

in my 78, i have original speakers with a small 4 inch or so flush speaker
grill. i have some 5.25 inch speakers that have a small, but not flush
speaker grill. mounting depth isn't an issue. i don't want to, but will
consider enlarging the actual speaker opening in the door to accomodate the
larger magnet, etc. does anyone have any thoughts how to do the least
damage to the door panel? does anyone have 5.25 speakers installed that
don't interfere with the door handles?
