OT:Re: Cincy - Anyone heading out of or through the Chicago area?

Step aside kids, and I'll tell you about a *real *roadtrip form hell.
Goal - Washington Dc to Montreal in a honda accord, and back with moving
van/house/family
3 of us in honda. Get lost in Upstate NY in the middle of the night, it
starts snowing. Hey look! we've gone 3 hours in teh wrong direction
The first time I really knew fear was when the french-canadian was doing
105 on a show covered highway at 3am. We realize we're going to be late for
his wedding at the courthouse at 9am (his common-law wife had to be a legal
wife to enter usa on his visa) 6am call wife, explain mistake, she calls
couthouse at 8 and reschedules. Arrive MOntreal at 8.30, 20 min power nap
then shower/shave/shake off 12 hour roadtrip and go to wedding. wedding,
cool, wedding party cool, poutines, delish.
day 2 - [pickup 26ft moving van. It's stuck in ice. free van. it stalls
repeatedly, due to a faulty ground. the next closest van is 3 hours away.
decision made to take our chances. Load van. Fine meal in fine hotel, since
house is empty.
day 3 - leaveing. French-canadian and buddy in van, me, (friends) wife and
3 year old daughter in honda. It's -5f, really cold! Oops, wife packed
passports required to enter usa. In the dresser. In the front of the van.
Tense walkie-talkie van/honda conversation ensues. Pulling over, digging
through truck on side of the 401 (remember how cold it is!) Oops, locked
keys in the Honda. WIth the daughter in the back seat. At least the car is
running, eh? Dad somehow manages to coax daughter (still strapped into car
seat) to unlock back door. Gas stop. Van won't start. I pull out and have
accident in honda (doh!) climactic end of trip. the stressfull end was
realizing the van would do 60 uphill, and 65 on the flats. honda leaves van
in the dust. Arrival at home, late that evening. Sleep. self-medicate
with martinis.

And that, friends, was one hell of a roadtrip. I paid to ahve the bumper on
the honda fixed and we're still friends. we made subsequent roadtrips from
the dc suburbs to Montreal in under 10 hours. My friend drives like a
maniac. Montreal is fun.

Cheers!
