You don't need to lie, you just need to tell them
enough to get what you want. The DMV isn't going to
give you a police escort or anything.

What I'd do is tell them you will be exiting the state
via Los Angeles in the next few days, and it's none of
their biz past that.

What you get is a temp sticker to tape in the window.

Under NO circumstances get stuck with paying old fees.
