A C-section (channel) has very little torsional resistance.  The weight penalty would not be worth it.
Stick to bar stock or tubing (round cross section in either case would give you most effect/pound of bar weight.

  I think what I'll try to do is make a few different styles - one like
  Shine's, another made with tubing, and another using C channel w/
  Ron's specs.
