Best way to "flush out" a dirty tranny? HELP!

I've seen two trannies that had water inside.
In one the gears were rusted to the extent the gear teeth were pitted. Not good for strength!
In the second water had gotten between the synchro ring and the gear cone. It was bad enough that I
pitched the parts.
So, it might be good and flushable, but it might also be junk.
Maybe pulling the 5th gear cover will give you an indication.
