Uh, NO, Eric - there WAS a 1.6TD ECO diesel on the US market (we were
spared this abomination north of the border,) but the 1.9TD AAZ motor
was ALSO called an ECO diesel. This engine has fuel delivery and timing
maps to minimize soot and NOX output. It is a non-EGR engine with a
one-way catalyst (same as the 1.6 ECO and TDIs) The engine came in B3
Passat and A3 platform cars in Canada.

And the 1.6 ECOdiesel would ONLY be fun to drive because of the 4.25
final drive. This engine was coupled with short gear ratios to keep
particulate emissions low. Its torque numbers were more in line with a
normally aspirated diesel (75-80 lb-ft range) do to the lack of fuelling
on boost.

The TDI's (like any diesel) power output varies greatly depending on
factors such as ambient air temperature, and fuel temperature and cetane
rating. The EDC (elctronic diesel control) computer's job is to monitor
these and other parameters (the key ones being air mass at the MAF and
intake manifold pressure) and adjust fuel timing and volume to minimize
emissions and maximize power output. Because of this, a stock TDI (or
any other diesel) will perform much better at sea level on a cool day
than it will on a hot day at 7500 feet.
