No Reverse??

I'm with "Tranny-man Ron" on this one. Reverse gear in the later 020
and 02A gearboxes is made out of china or ceramic or some equally
fragile material (like that stuff they used to make matchbox cars out
of?) They don't take kindly to rolling shifts into reverse.

The running and driving fine without reverse is probably a temporary
thing - the bits of the broken reverse gear are looking for places to
come to rest - often they like to try to nestle between the crown and
pinion gears in the final drive, and then they get into an ugly argument
that everybody (including the car owner) loses.

If the car makes ugly clicking sounds in reverse, then run, don't walk,
away.
