Funny the vin range on one part of the screen has one less digit than what
any VW known to mankind has, and further up on the recall, it looks like I
fit into the right range. Which I knew before I even went in. So my VIN
doesn't call up the recall, and they are "waiting to hear back from head
office", which is total and complete bullshit as far as I am concerned. At
least the owner agreed it is in the correct range.

On this bit, they are not bullshitting you. The dealer will call VW and ask
them to confirm the details you already know. The reason for this is
because VW will be taking care of the bill. Now, as to whether they will be
honest with you thereafter is another matter. On any recall, the pay to the
mechanic to do the job is minimal, so they will normally do what they can to
avoid it (and VW wonders why their numbers are down)... Anyways, the part
about calling the head office is on the mark, but it will remain to be seen
if they are...
Good Luck,
  David
