Removing material from the outside of a spinning object reduces internal stresses and makes it LESS
likely to grenade.
If you were removing material across the entire face of a conventional flywheel (i.e. the flywheel
bolts directly to the crank) that had a heavy outer ring it would weaken the flywheel. But just
removing material from the outer ring and leaving the friction face intact actually makes it capable
of higher RPM before grenading.

Doubt if properly lightened flywheels are in much danger of grenading; VW engines won't rev high
enough to do that job!!
