rust on block surfaces during rebuild?

YOU IDIOT! Throw the block away, it's toast.

Naw, just kidding. We're talking cast iron here, so a little scrub isn't going to do anything to it. And if it makes you feel better, I used my air angle grinder with a scotch brite pad to scrape off the old gasket residue from my turbo diesel (with 23:1 compression), and it chugs away happily as my daily (you saw me driving it, no?). I wouldn't use it on an aluminum head, though. Let the machine shop surface it for you.

On the gasket areas of the ABA block I'm rebuilding, some very minor surface
rust has started to show (water pump, front/rear main and int.shaft seal, oil
pan areas). Should I be concerned with it other than just wiping the surface
down with carb cleaner? Is there a more-preferred method to treat it? The guy
at the machine shop gave me a good chastizing when I mentioned using maroon
Scotch-brite on engine surface (head or block)...

Thanks, Jeff
