[tech]020 5th gear advice

You can replace 5th gear with the tranny in the car.
Unfortunately, two things seem to get damaged when 5th strips. 1) the
splines on the pinion shaft where the driven 5th gear mount seem to get
rounded so the gear can wobble. 2) the ring and pinion seem to loose some
teeth. There isn't much room between the ring gear and the housing and the
ring gear is at the lowest point of the tranny, so any little bits get
picked up by the ring gear going by get caught between the ring and pinion.
The only way to check for ring and pinion damage is to take the tranny
completely apart.
If the car was parked right after 5th stripped there may be a chance the R &
P are OK, but if it was driven much I wouldn't hope for much.
