Crank shaft woodruff key Q's

Not sure which engine you're talking about here but I had the exact same
"smearing" problem on my old 1.8l 16v block and it -will- catch up with
you (rather quickly). I replaced the sprocket and bolt 3 times over the
course of about a year and a half and each time it just got the crap
hammered out of it -- when I took the last old, loose one off there was
only about 1-2mm of that 10mm key left. It was a brand new sprocket 6
months before that. Amazing that the car ran at all.. and the valves were
still intact.

I 'fixed' it by replacing it will a 2l 16v block :) Not a cheap project,
though.

AFA replacing the crankshaft.. if it's a 1.8l 16v you shouldn't have too
much trouble finding one for under a hundee. Also I think the crank from
one of the 8v high compression motors might be the same (RD?)
