OT: buying car in another state - hows it *supposed to* work

I believe you have 10 days to tell your insurance company about the new car, at least that is with my insurance company.  As long as you have a current policy you should be fine.  As far as the plate, if you don't have one, I have known people  to just put a card back there that says "in transit" without any problem.
