Turns signals that don't blink / smoking wires

Thanks to some help from Anson and "Cheapass" Ron (alter
ego Ronald Duck the Cheap F**k - yeah, we were drunk last
night) I might have a drivable '80 S. (More test driving
will ensue shortly.) The next big problem is the turn
signals don't blink. The flashers seem to work fine, but
turn signals just give you a steady light on the dash,
nothing else. What might cause this?

Also, I bumped the one of the brake light switch connectors
this morning (attaches to the master cylinder) and got a
couple wisps of smoke. The connector also shows evidence
of being hot at some point. Any thoughts?
