Considering rewiring need input



I think what you should try to look into first is just upgrading to some
newer vw wiring.

Is it a mk1?  You can probably get some good wiring out of a later mk2, and
while you're doing it you might as well just do the dash swap.  If you swap
the dash you don't have to monkey around with converting all the connectors.
Just find a late mk2 in a wrecker and take everything you can. If you
monitor the yards for a little while you're bound to find a good mk2! I
think that would be the easiest way.
