Handbrake cables

Just installed A3 rear calipers on my 87 and the handbrake cables are
too short to get the nuts on.
Considering all the other balled up crap on this car it wouldn't suprise
me if these cables were not correct for the application.
Anybody else have any problems with too short cables using A3 calipers
before I blow more money on this piece of crap and buy new ones?
