The cross flow throttle linkage and such would seem such a minor item
compared to turbo manifold issues and all that, that I wouldn't
consider them show stoppers.

The JH is a bird in the hand but the x-flow seems an even better
choice. (Except for the height.)  Maybe you should install a WRX style
inter cooler hood scoop.  ;])
