Got oil cooler, now what size fitting?

OK, found a Volvo 740 oil cooler.  Now what size AN fittings do I need?  The thread on the cooler is the size of a 1/2" bolt, so does that mean -8 AN, or do I need some sort of Flare-to-Pipe adapter piece first?  Which reminds me, what exactly are these for?  Are AN threads different than pipe threads?
