wiper arm lenth

I just spent all afternoon farking around with a Mk1 monowiper 
linkage in my '87.  Short story is that it doesn't work as flawlessly 
as I had hoped - the linkage seems to interfere with both the blower 
motor and the mounting bracket for the knock box.  It's very minor, 
but still.  Anyways I used a wiper arm off an '83 scirocco with a 19" 
blade on it.  At rest on the passenger side the tip of teh blade is 
about 1/4" away from the seal, and at the full extent of its sweep 
it's maybe 2" away from the seal on the other side.
