16v Gurus, need help bad

Ok, so today i started my first headgasket project, it was a complete
failure, i removed the head changed the gasket and put it back on. changed
the timing belt and tensioner too. ok so this is what happens, i line up the
camshaft marks and crankshaft and put the belt on and everytime i try to
tighten the tension the crankshaft sprocket moves. so finally i got it on
but the vibration dampener was  abit off, the dist, camshaft and the
Flywheel marks all pointed to TDC. so i thought ok. it should be alrite. ohh
btw mini note here im using a thick headgasket to lower compression for
turbo. anyways so yeh i get the whole thing together. and i crank the engine
by hand with a ratchet 2 full rotations and nothing seems to hit? now it
wont start. it seems the starter cant turn it. it turns then stops and it
makes wierd sounds. im scared of pistons hitten the valves? could this be a
possibility? please help me out here. ohh and for some odd reason the oil
smells like gasoline? anyways thanks for the help!
