16v assembly trouble

Do you have a bentley?

I've found it very usefull when it comes to timing / ignition / clutch /
brake etc... work.

With your flywheel at TDC the mark on the cam gear will be lining up with
the mark on the valve cover (or 180° out, if this is the case rotate the
crank another revolution), always rotate the crank clockwise (when looking
from pass side), when these marks are lined up the ignition timing is
roughly set as the distributer is directly linked to the camshafts (no
intermediate shaft to line up). The distributer will only go on one way.
Keep the screws for the distributer snug but not tight, btw use the holes at
10 and 4 for the distributer not 2 and 8! DOH! If everything is working ie
knock box, hall sender, ignition computer, feul delivery, etc... (this is
where the bentley really helps!), the car will start, may not run well, but
now you can time the spark by rotating the distributer and using a timing
gun...

I've got some pics if you want more help...

Thanks Peter, I have an antique "push it in the hole" type of compression
tester and of course that is of no value where a 16v is concerned.

I've reset everything based upon the flywheel TDC mark which looks to be
correct. Now I have another question that stems from my ignorance of
electronic ignition. In the old days, oh I'm old, so rather I should say in
the time of points and condenser a test light could be put on to get to the
approximate ignition timing. Then when it was running the dynamic timing
light would finish the job. How do you set the ignition timing up for the
first run? The timing light is rather pointless before it runs.
