16v assembly trouble

I have a greasy old Bentley, this is how I can definitively say that the
ignition and fuel systems are working. I've done all of the checks for
these. Although I'm far from a novice at building engines, this is my fir=
st
water-cooled VW. I'll also admit that valve timing has given me fits befo=
re
but I've never failed for three days to sort it out. By posting these
questions I'm really asking what is peculiar about the 1.8 16v and what's=
 up
with the v belt pulley mark being off by 90 Deg.?
