5th gear problem - I need guidance

My brother and I recently did a clutch and ring gear bolts to his '82 Cabby
with a GTI transplant. More particulars about the tranny and engine will be
forthcoming as soon as his girlfriend comes home with it. The tranny got all
new seals, gaskets, throw out bearing and just about everything else we
could change. The bearings were good and the syncros were within tolerance.
Actually on the fresher side of the tolerances which was a surprise to me
for one with about 200K on it. We put 2 quarts of MTL in it and it seemed to
be fine. Now three days later it is falling (not popping) out of 5th. The
questions are, did I put something in wrong in the 5th gear area? Is it the
missing 0.1 quart of fluid? Is it just a linkage problem?

The help of the esteemed list with this diagnosis would be greatly
appreciated.
