Having it tested will decide for you; compression test, etc. Oil pump
and any trick baffling (oil pan or VW MotorSport clamp in tray [it
replaces the gasket too]) timing belt and tensioner, valve cover gasket
upgraded to the all rubber style w/ new studs, these fall under stuff to
do. 

I see that I haven't addressed your original question though: well you
can
increase air flow and reduce drag and other losses. Lightened/ balanced
flywheel, balanced crank (although I understand they are already pretty
well balanced from the factory- maybe knife-edged, but it's a racer
thing), head work will help- not just porting for porting sake but
removing some of the valve guide material (it sticks down in the air
flow)- this requires shorter valve bushings btw, <pant, pant>, uh aw
damn, I'm sleepy.
