NO. Don't do this on your car, you will burn out components. The battery
needs to be in the loop.

With the car running test across the battery terminals. Getting at least
12.5 volts? No? You may need to verify, clean, recondition the ground to
chassis, Hot to Starter/ loom, ground from chassis to block straps. 

Also you might have gotten a bum (DOA) Alt so take it back and get it
tested.

Besides the fact that you got a new Alt, you also have a drained
battery, they often need a really good recharge before you can trust the
Alt to keep them up.
