self-closing vents?

Larry,
    mk2 does it. moving the top lever around should make the center vent
close/open. I dont remember exactly which position does what, but i
distinctly remember sitting in my first scirocco (before i bought it). you
could move that lever and hear the vacuum moving the damper, and that was
with the car off!!. you could even see the damper move through the center
vent. keep in mind this was in 93 and i was looking at an 88 16v (when
everything still worked). none of my other 6 roccos have had that vacuum
thing work properly since then. you can get to the actual vacuum servo for
it on the driver side of the center console, up under the dash.
    As for the instruction manual, i think its talking about the side vents,
as closing the center vent is done for you already (well, supposed to be at
least).
One day the rieger will be that vacuum-tight....
